Some Dark HollerSome Dark Holler       7/10

PICTURE A SCENE from O’ Brother and you have the flavour of a Some Dark Holler song; pretty on the surface and unsettling underneath.
”It’s super cinematic,” says frontman Chris Porter, the ‘straightman’ for fiddler and backing singer Helen Gassenheimer. ”Helen has an amazing ability with her harmonies,” he explained to tincanland. ”She manages to find plenty of space and pocket without forcing it, or being predictable.”
The unique Porter-Gassenheimer partnership helps Some Dark Holler ”keep within the realm of traditional music without following any folk/bluegrass rulebook,” says Porter, who shrugs off being ”just a little darker than some of our compadres. Honest story songs rarely have happy endings.”
The unsigned – but not for long – Alabama threesome (Eric Onimous plays bass) have self-financed a debut EP, available – remarkably – for free download.
