I work on my Future Playlists files as I run across songs I want to feature some day. With Buffy Sainte-Marie being pilloried on social media these days, it’s time to share my Songs Of First Nations.
If you will, please take a moment before clicking play to reflect on what you expect to hear.
Wow! Loving this songlist. So much pain and joy and suffering and life. And the voices of Crystal Shawanda and Shawnee Kish! And to think, my previous exposure to Indigenous-themes in music was old school and from the U.S. and across the pond — e.g. Cher’s “Half Breed,” Elton John’s “Indian Sunset” and Queen’s “White Man.”
Thanks for the music 🙂
You nailed it – pain and joy and suffering and life. That’s what I was hoping would shine through.
I remember talking to an older blues guy one time about the hurting behind the blues, and he said “oh, no, the blues isn’t about suffering. It’s about hope.” (Mind he did come at it from the gospel side.)
